Wax Lyrical manufacturing hand sanitiser from its home fragrance factory
News Update: 30th March 2020
Ulverston home fragrance manufacturer, Wax Lyrical, adapts its factory to produce hand and surface sanitisers and has made first delivery to Furness General Hospital.
In a bid to address the national shortage of sanitiser, Wax Lyrical has adapted its Cumbria-based facility, which usually manufacture candles, reed diffusers and other home fragrances, to create 70% alcohol hand sanitisers and surface sprays.
Production began on 26th March and 100,000 units were delivered to Furness General Hospital, Barrow, just days later.
Warren Gell, Global Commercial Director of Wax Lyrical, said: “We really wanted to find a way to help. To produce an essential product for dedicated front-line workers was a way that our facilities could be put to such important use. I’m so proud of the team at Wax Lyrical who have worked together to prepare for this production in just a matter of days.”
Wax Lyrical Head of Laboratory & Innovation Dr Will Locke, has worked alongside personal care manufacturing specialist Jeremy Thomas to create a new sanitiser formula and the liquid lines in the factory, which are usually used to manufacture reed diffuser fragrances, have been converted to pump the alcohol for the sanitisers, all within a matter of days.
The factory has the capabilities to manufacture up to 1 million units of sanitiser per week and the first distribution has been prioritised for the NHS, care homes, hospices and pharmacies, firstly in Cumbria and Lancashire, by way of supporting local communities.
Warren Gell added: “We’re able to do something very necessary by supplying vital products to people on the front-line who are doing the most important job of all. Helping to keep those people protected is a small part we can play in working together at this critical time.”
Jim Collins, Head of Integrated Procurement & Supplies, Cumbria and North Lancashire Procurement Services said: “This is a fantastic and inspiring idea which is very much appreciated and critically will provide protection to our front-line clinicians, which is critical to our response to the on-going pandemic.
We’re so grateful to be able to source a reliable supply of such a critical PPE (personal protective equipment) and for the proactive approach of Wax Lyrical.”
Following the supply to front-line workers, the sanitiser will later be made available to the public in 60ml hand sanitisers and 100ml surface sprays. The formula is 70% alcohol and is designed to be kind to skin.
